Recently announced on Evo 13’s official informant site, Shoryuken.com, was the lineup of games for this year’s Evo Championship. Expanding on the previous year’s roster of six, 2013’s lineup promises two more titles with a several others spotting updated versions. While the expanded roster has been warmly received by fighting games enthusiasts everywhere, the rehashed setup has done little to surprise given the soaring popularity of many of these titles.
Making the list of eight thus far are fan-favorites Super Street Fighter 4, Tekken Tag Tournament 2, King of Fighters 13, as well as popular titles Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Street Fighter X Tekken, Mortal Combat 9 and Persona 4 Arena. The identity of the eighth game however, hinges on the outcome of an ongoing fundraiser held to help the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. All will be revealed come end January when the representation who raises the most money for the charity will earn his game the rights to the last competing entrant to the 2013 Evo series.
Samuel “DM.MCZ.ShenOu” of Team Desperation Move, a regular representative of Singapore to the prestigious event, found to his disappointment that the roster could not have been bigger. “There were a lot of titles released between Evo 2k12 and Evo 2k13; Dead or Alive 5, Playstation All-Stars, Persona 4 Arena, Injustice just to name a few, and it is a pity that there weren't enough slots for all of them,” he recounted.
Lauding the lineup, the organizer of the Community League for Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition back in 2012, singled out Persona 4 Arena to be the best addition to the Evo 2013 lineup yet. “It (Persona 4 Arena) is the title with the most pedigree in terms of game development. In addition it is completely unique when compared to the other titles in the line-up.”
While most onlookers will expect the usual suspects; Justin Wong, Tokido, Daigo and Gamerbee, just to name a few, to once again dominate headlines at the event, Samuel remains adamant that last year’s Canada Cup double winner DM.MCZ.Xian, will no doubt be one to watch as well. “Forgive me for sounding biased but I must say DM.MCZ.Xian has been putting a lot of work into his games since last Evo and as Canada Cup 2012 has showed, he is ready to take International Events,” said DM.MCZ.ShenOu as he described his fellow countryman’s chances.
“We have SEA Major 2013 coming up in June which is the local Road to Evo 2013 event. And leading up to that there are a lot of events coming up to help any player who is planning to go to Evo, prepare for the tournament that awaits them there,” added the former competitive gamer who has since invested his time into growing local talents. “If 2012 was any indication of what's to come, Evo 2013 is definitely going to be exciting for Singaporean Gamers!” – And reviewing the Evo lineup it certainy looks to be an exciting year for gamers and fans all over the world as well.
