Stephanie, also known as Athena from the all-girl gaming outfit based in Singapore, Team Girlaxy, is not one to shy away from the thick of battle. As a member of the team’s League of Legends (LoL) wing, she has won quite a reputation for herself given her aggressive approach to the game and flair for sneaky shenanigans characteristic of her most played champion, Wukong—the monkey king.
“I like him (Wukong) because of his “in your face” style where he can dash up to an opponent and whack him in the face with his rod,” explains Stephanie, “[in addition] his ability to leave a duplicate also allows the player to come up with some sneaky combinations.” However, as a team-orientated game, the focus is often less on an individual but what the collective can achieve with good teamwork and support—and this sometimes consolidating premeditated strategies. “We believe that playing the game well not only involves skill and teamwork but the ability to develop strategies that takes into account the team and opponent’s strengths and weaknesses."
Having been an avid gamer since the age of 14, there has been little doubt of her gaming pedigree despite playing in what has been a traditionally male dominated sport. As part of Team Girlaxy’s pioneering batch along with teammates Aurora, Raven and Mirth, the hardcore gamer has also assumed other responsibilities within the team like helping new girls settle into the setup. “It’s fun and really comfortable—comfortable in the sense that being in Girlaxy feels more like a family rather than a group of girls put together for the sake of competitive gaming.”
The most enjoyable aspect of being in an all-girl gaming squad is the camaraderie that goes along as Stephanie would like to point out. “When we’re not training we enjoy hanging out with each other. The managers will also organize fun events like visits to the Zoo or the Ballparks!” She excitably relates, “as our manager, codenamed ‘Daddy’ would say, ‘Don’t play games all day girls, go out and have a life!’ As a result, we have quite a variety of hobbies within the team.”
Primed for an appearance at the upcoming Garena Carnival which will take place at the end of November, alongside the Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Singapore for which a separate division from the team will be participating in, the fun loving gamer is optimistic about her chances at securing a medal at this year’s games. “We’re currently in our training phase and working very hard towards our goal of getting a podium finish at a local competition. [On top of that] we’re also aiming to expand our reach into the international scene!”
Well known for their quirky demeanor and highly recognizable pink attire, Stephanie adds that the team is always looking “to do something different together” and spectators and supports alike will no doubt have that in mind when the girls from Girlaxy take to the stage later this year. Recalling a past experience she adds, “when we were invited to do a series of show matches the girls came up with a crazy idea to have everyone wear cat ears on stage! It was slightly embarrassing but really fun!”
“I would like to shoutout to the rest of the girls in the team, our managers and our awesome sponsors! —Ttesports, Creative, Colosseum, Myrepublic and of course to all our lovely friendss who have been supporting us!”
