ArenaNet wants to make an eSport of Guild Wars 2

In a phone conversation with Report and a group of writers, ArenaNet, the creators of the hit MMORPG Guild Wars 2 (GW2), has communicated a strong intent of taking the brand into the eSports scene. Such a move isn’t at all surprising seeing that ArenaNet has in GW2 a robust PvP system, in addition to having had the privilege of studying other crossovers in the past such as Blizzard’s World of Warcraft (WoW). Should the move materialize, it will do so after the content pack concluding Flame and Frost story rolls out on April 30th, 2013.

One of the initiatives that will be pushed for with eSports in mind will be customizable arenas – a feature that will come with the Flame and Frost update. ArenaNet has indicated on several instances that they would like to see shoutcasting, a recent staple for eSports, in custom arena battles. A move like this will definitely do wonders for Guild Wars 2’s bid to carve a niche for themselves in the growing eSport market. In response to the then speculative questions of whether ArenaNet was genuinely interesting in gunning for the eSports territory the ArenaNet representative replied with a “definitely”.

What do you guys think? Is this a step in the right direction for ArenaNet and their hugely successful MMO Guild Wars 2? How will the eSports scene benefit? Let us know in the comments section below!
