With the Asian Cyber Games (ACG) and the World Cyber Games (WCG) Singapore qualifiers scheduled for the same day in September 2012, it was no wonder Kim Leong, Singapore’s reigning WCG champion for FIFA, was struck down with a seemingly impassable dilemma when he was asked to represent his country at the ACG instead of defending his crown at the WCG national qualifiers which is to be held at TGX 12. Having recently decided to put the needs of the nation before one’s own, Kim tells us of the trying time he had to endure whilst making his call.

“It was a really tough decision to pick either WCG or ACG which clash at the same date, [made worse] because playing in ACG means I can’t have any chance to defend my WCG title in Singapore but playing in the WCG means I can’t represent my country in ACG. I was really sad that I had to face this situation but in the end I choose the one which [I feel] I’m not going to regret,” expresses the FIFA veteran most solemnly.
However, thankfully Kim’s decision to meet his country’s request over his own desire to retain the crown was met with overwhelming support from his friends and clan mates. “It has been a headache for me, but in discussions with my friends and Kickers mates they were supportive of my choice and the outcome. In the end the country comes first, that’s why I [have] decided to play in ACG.”
ACG 2012, which will be held on the 7th September to 9th September at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is set to host some of the biggest and brightest eSports talents in the region and Kim has taken serious note of what could be potentially tricky opposition. “ACG is obviously tougher and harder because it involves all the countries from Asia and champions from all round the region. I will have to play the best of my game in order to shine at ACG.”
Playing at the ACG over the first weekend of September also carries special significance to the pro FIFA player. Celebrating his birthday on the 8th, Kim will be well into his gaming groove and too far away from his family and friends to conduct a traditional celebration. However the FIFA veteran is undeterred as he looks to celebrate his birthday with ACG glory. “I’m not only going to be fighting for country pride but because it’s my birthday too! I hope [that] I can find some time to update and share my experiences and reply the wishes that I will get on Facebook!”
“I am especially grateful to Fun Square, a gaming shop that has always provided me with gaming accessories—and also to my new company Allswin Logistics & Services Pte Ltd for giving me this chance to experience the Asia Championship Games in Kuala Lumpur! Not forgetting Scoga, for their support in my tough situations and for helping me with flight issues!”
