Singapore Sentinels Make Singapore’s First Ever E-Sports Transfer
Prominent League of Legends outfit, the Singapore Sentinels (SGS), have moved in to secure the services of InSidious Gaming’s Hoong “Kryonics” Fan Kai for an undisclosed fee. This development, being the first of its kind here, represents a groundbreaking moment in the short history of Singapore eSports and is likely to open the doors to more of such paid transfers in the future.
The move comes in the wake of SGS.hyhy’s departure from professional gaming. The former Dota 2 gamer has indicated that he will adjourn indefinitely to pursue “new endeavours” and entrepreneurial ventures. Wishing him all the best, SGS went on to state in the announcement post on Facebook that hyhy will still maintain close contact with the team, seemingly leaving the door to the player to return if he so desires.
The new Sentinel lineup sees the new member, SGS.Kryonics, take up the role of AP carry with SGS.Benw running top lane, SGS.Kailing in support, SGS.Harleluyar in the familiar jungler position and SGS.Chawy running the show as AD carry. Describing the latest addition as a player with “superb mechanics second only to Chawy”, there will be no doubt high expectations of Kryonics who has, in his year long stint at ISG, guided the team to the finals of the recent Philips LoL Tournament and Hong Kong Esports Tournament.
The implications of this transfer are massive though. In light of recent events following the recognition of LoL as a legitimate sport in America, a paid transfer here represents a huge leap forward for eSports in Singapore, and a victory for the regional eSports scene. As the nation, and region by extension, strive to have eSports legitimized as a real sport, moments like this will be pivotal. Should paid transfers catch on you can expect other games such as Dota and FIFA to follow suit. Makes you excited to be an eSports fan doesn’t it?
