For some, a game is never just a game. For the large group of assembled gaming geeks at the final round of Delhi Times God of Gaming contest, winning meant everything.
After over 2,000 people registered for the two-day tournament, only a handful made it to the final round held at MGF Metropolitan Mall on Sunday in Gurgaon.
The contestants displayed their prowess in any one game out of four – the options included.
Need for Speed (NFS) and FIFA for the solo players and for those participating in groups, the choice lay between Counter Strike and Defense of the Ancients (DOTA).
The event, currently in its second year in Delhi, was conceptualised keeping in mind the growing LAN gaming culture in India, especially in metros like Delhi. The participants took their games very seriously, as they played on undaunted by the ruckus and din of the surroundings – some had even got their headsets with them, so that all they’d hear would be the game.

One of the first games to conclude was Need for Speed, and we managed to exchange a few words with the winner, Sanjit Singh Alhuwalia. A computer engineer by profession, he works in an IT firm. “What attracts me to gaming is the recognition that one gets in the gaming community. I have won the God of Gaming tournament two years in a row, and people who follow NFS all know who I am, they recognise me,” he said proudly. “I think we all like these games because of our external interests. I love fancy cars and car racing, which is why NFS really excites me. Any car fanatic would love this game.
For people who play FIFA, they are usually big fans of players like Messi in their real lives, which is why they’re attracted to the game.” We wonder if his colleagues at the IT firm share his love for gaming.“Not at all,”he laughed, “They’re into stuff like Farmville.”
The winners were presented with their prizes by model Ritu Singh, who couldn’t help but look around and marvel at the dedication of the gamers. She posed happily alongside the winners, and awarded them with hi-tech gifts. God of Gaming was organised in association with Alienware as PC partners, SteelSeries as gift partner andGamekhel, the ultimate gaming destination where you can play, download, and read reviews of the hottest games online, as gaming partner.
