It seems that the National University of Singapore (NUS) is getting in on the act – joining schools from all over the world, the varsity has submitted what currently is Singapore’s only collegial representation at the Azbu Collegiate Championship Starcraft 2 series. Led by Team Eve’s frontman EveRekanise and coordinator EveCarrot, the team will have to contest the likes of other universities in Asian division before their hopes of progressing to the latter stages of the tournament can be realized.

Speaking to us prior to their next matchup against New Zealander opposition, leader Alaric “Rekanise” Choo takes us through the team setup as well as the motivations for this groundbreaking outfit. “The NUS team comprises mostly of Team Eve players, six out of seven to be precise. Although not mostly from our Tier one team, we are quite optimistic about our chances in the league.”

“The concept to represent your university at an international level sounded like a fun concept,” he explains, “and the prize pool was really large so that was a major draw for us.” In addition, alluding to the unjustly trend that gamers in universities struggle to make their mark or play effectively through the study storm, typically in Singapore where recognition is fleeting, Alaric hopes that in taking out some big players at the competition he can help prove that competitive gamers in universities can do just as well if not better.

Talking tactics, Rekanise mulls over methods of gaining the one up over his opponents despite running a tight training schedule given that the exams are in season too. “Because of the way the maps are allocated as a team we can more or less designate players based on it being advantageous to a particular race and some of us have a heavier workload than others due to it being the exam period so it becomes easy to pick a lineup,” notes the team lead, “[and] we usually discuss lineups as a team.”

The team lineup which features the likes of Eveparachute, EveJaFF, EveSnow, ChosenOne, EveCarrot and the captain himself, EveRekanise, boasts a good mix of experience and invention with several players having graced large-scale tournaments at TGX, IESF and WCG before. This as Rekanise points out bodes extremely well for the team. “The seventh player, ChosenOne, is a friend of mine and the team knows him very well. We have a good understanding of our strengths so we can plan the best possible roster and since we all know each other quite well discussions are smooth.”

“Since it’s mostly Team Eve, we’d like to give a shoutout to our current sponsors Own3d.tv, aftershockpc and Roccat. Also a shoutout to NUS and the eSporting community here!”
