Flash.Hibidi: Nothing tastes sweeter than gold

Nothing tastes sweeter than gold itself, and those who’ve walked home with top honors can testify to that. However, like anyone who’s played at the highest level long enough would know, losing in a final—as bitter as it is, can happen to anyone and a winner is one who takes it is his stride and comes out a better player. Wen Jun, who goes by Hibidi, is a familiar personality to be had at WCG FIFA finals. Having endured an unfortunate elimination at last year’s event, the tenacious veteran was notably empathetic towards his opponent and fellow teammate, Joseph “Zara”, after successfully seeing off the last set in the finals.

“When you win a competition as important as WCG, it’s a great feeling regardless of who you play against,” he said, “Having said that, out of respect for Zara as a player, a teammate and a good friend, I obviously didn’t celebrate as much as I usually would—it’s a horrible feeling to lose in a final and so I always try to be gracious in victory.” And many would agree that such displays of professionalism and sportsmanship are a lot easier said than done, especially so for any passionate gamer like Hibidi, which makes his demeanor ever more admirable.

Recalling his semi final game against Ahmad “musibots” Baihaqhi, Wen Jun explained how attempts to throw him off his game brought out the rabid combatant in him. “His supporters were being rowdy and were trying to wind me up throughout the round, so it was really satisfying to be able to keep scoring and then celebrate in their faces with my trademark ‘COME ON’! Whenever anyone makes the first move by taunting me, I go out of my way and play at 200% of my level to beat them. I just want to say I respect him (musibots) as a player but his fans picked the worst person to have a shouting contest with.”

Having been the chief organizer of the FIFA Cup, a monthly series dedicated at developing local FIFA talents and raising the level of play, the captain of Flash’s FIFA squad was pleased to find a heightened standard of play at TGX 12. Barring the few who were disposed on using negative tactics to stifle the finalist, HIbidi was delighted to find that the majority of players were much improved over recent years—attributing that to the success of the FIFA Cup series which is slated to return sometime later this year.

Having found a winning formula in the white of Real Madrid, the astute player seeks to maintain his good run of results at the FIFA 12 World Championship in December. “Once that’s out of the way I’ll be 100% focused on getting ready for the FIFA 12 World Championships,” he assured, targeting a much better run-in than his fellow national compatriots at international meets in recent times.
