Jason Chan is much like any other Singaporean his age. As a first year student at Temasek Polytechnic, he enjoys hanging out with friends, watching movies and playing video games. However, while others play video games for fun, he means business. Faring better than all the other Singaporean representatives at the recent Eve PokerStrategy Cup, Jason, also known as Yekke from team Eve, is certainly one Starcraft 2 player to look out for in the future.

Losing the semifinal fixture to the eventual winner, ST_KingKong, a Korean player, was hard on the young player, but Jason insists his overall good performance was validation of his efforts and hard work poured into sharpening his Starcraft 2 skills. “While I’m disappointed that I wasn’t able to win the tournament, it’s really nice to see that the time I’ve put into practicing SC2 hasn’t been for nothing,” with the most rewarding victory of the tournament coming in the 4th round tie against renown Protoss player, SQLdelete.

While definitely a rising star in the sci-fi RTS universe of Starcraft, Jason admits that he didn’t start out his eSports career as a Starcraft player. “I played DotA when it first came out—back then it was called DotA All-Stars. [But] before July 27, 2010 when SC2 was released, I’d already known that it’d be the game that I’d spend the majority of my time on. It just seemed like the right game for me to get into where I don’t have to rely on my team mates playing well for me to succeed.”

“I’m not sure if I’d consider myself a professional gamer”, Yekke humbly concedes, “but it’s been a really great experience so far and I’m thankful to Team Eve is helping for promoting E-sports as a legitimate hobby in Singapore and the rest of SEA.” Playing for the most part as a Zerg player, the Eve member was quick to point out that IdrA was one of his early inspirations. And like Idra, though less vocal and better mannered, Jason has his gripes and banes regarding cross race match-ups. “Let it be known that carriers are the bane of my existence in SC2, having a 0% win rate against HongUn (Yes, formerly HongUnPrime) when he builds them against me,” he laughs.

Still the affable gamer remains all smiles when it comes to the headway and improvements his team Eve has made in developing the scene as well as fellow eSport professionals like himself. “It’s really been great being able to play with such great people and friends this past year and I’m really excited for the things that we have in store for the SC2 community and the team as a whole,” he relates, “I’d like to thank the team’s sponsor, PokerStrategy, and My team leaders EveRekanise and EveJaFF for their undying support and overall management of the team!”

The PokerStrategy Cup hosted by PokerStrategy, one of the biggest sponsors in eSports and also the official sponsor of team Eve boasted a top prize of US$600 and was streamed live to over 2380 viewers.
